choosing an artist/song

The record labels in today's music industry have two ways of deciding how and who to sign.

1. discover an existing artist/band

They keep a lookout for new undiscovered talent especially on the internet. They use Social media platforms, Youtube, Soundcloud, Spotify, and others. There is another way of doing this (in the real world/ in person) even though this is not that common these days, ANR agents from record labels go to live music events/gigs and look for new talent to sign. The artists that get signed in this way are called "organic" because they already have a set style, image, genre of music they make and they also usually write their own material. An existing example of a 'organic' artist would be Ed Sheehan, Adele, Frank Ocean, Taylor Swift, and others. These artist usually have a lasting carrier.

2. create an artist/band (forcefully)

This is the second way of how the record labels sign artists/bands. Sometimes they hold auditions or they find them through talent shows like X-Factor, Britain's Got Talent, America's Got Talent, The Voice. These artist are usually given an image, style and music by the record label, who told them into being what then 'need' them to be. They usually aim at a specific audience. These artists are usually more short term successes. Examples of artist that were created synthetically would be: One Direction, Milly Vanilli, Rak-Su, Little Mix, Fifth Harmony.

Young B

Group or solo? -solo

What is the ethnicity of original artist/ - half American/ half French

Is there a national accent? - American (white)

What age is the original artist? - 21

Is it possible for us to effectively cast this part/parts from 17/18 year old students? - Yes

Young B is the artist name of Bartholomew Raguz. I have known him personally for over 4 years. I have been involved in some of the writing processes of his music and have seen him grow as an artist for myself. his songs are dominantly rap songs, but he occasionally records a R&B song or a chorus to some songs. I really like the vibe of his music, especially because I know about the contexts they are written in. The music he produces is very modern and he also has is own specific style. His lyrics are also relatable to the people who listen to his music.

The song I would choose to do a music video for would be: MA CHÉRIE (there is a couple lines in French, but quite easy)/ VIBE or HOTEL 555.

  1. Hi Mills

I agree, Young B definitely looks like someone you kind a face for at school - this is a key filter! It's a shame you didn't mention about Negus' notions of organic and synthetic ideologies of record labels, given a few examples of those type of investment strategies/artists, and then linked this into the choice that you face yourself! Feel free to add these in if you get a chance and this will help to demonstrate what you are learning from research and importantly how this is impacting on your own planning...
