When it comes to music videos created for solo artists, the most important video is their first one. Through this video we find out who this artist is, what is their style/vibe and what's their domaine. Matt showed us a couple examples of first music videos of bands and solo artists, then we analysed them and broke them down.
The first video we saw was Dua Lipa's first music video:
In this video it was only focused on the solo artist. There was a lot of different settings and setups, she wore a lot of different outfits and gave a sense of her being almost like a model. It was very focused on her face. The video lacked a bit of personality.
The next video we saw was also from a solo artist, Lady Gaga:
The song itself and then the video on tom of it had a lot of personality and we could see that thanks to the solo artist's performance, the setting and how natural and unforced she looked in it. The video had an urban look to it and was interesting the whole way through. There were also a lot of deferent setting, but relatable to each other in a way. There were also actors in the music video in the background since the narrative was like a house party.
Then we watched first music videos of bands, the first one we saw was by Coldplay:
This video showed a lot of things about the band and members in it. The video tried to make them relatable to the public, but putting them in everyday clothes, in a studio set up. They were kind of facing each other turning inwards, this showed that the members were close friends and showed a sense of 'togetherness' within the band.
The next music video was by the band Maroon 5, who have already been together for over 12 years:
The coloraturas pallet was very dark and the editing was very interesting. The way they were using props within the set was also intriguing. The lead singer was the main focus within the band and was on camera 85% of the time. we would see snippets of the other band members. Its's clear in this video that the producers were trying to sell the main singer the most to the audience.
